Before your visit

Our themed learning journeys provide a scaffolded approach to exploring exhibition-related topics such as climate change, evolution, animal adaptations and more. Follow along with our suggested plan of pre-visit stimulus, in-exhibition activities and post-visit classroom ideas to maximise learning and get the most out of your excursion.

We also have self-led resources that scaffold for your students' learning within the exhibitions, using thought-provoking questions, simple tasks and engaging prompts. There are two types: conversation starters and exhibition insights.

  • Conversation starters ignite creative dialogue between students and their teachers. Through freedom of choice, fun questions and quick activities, students can investigate specimens and objects through a new lens. No prior knowledge of the exhibition is needed.
  • Exhibition insights help students develop historical or scientific inquiry skills through connecting with key objects or specimens on display in exhibitions. Students are encouraged to discuss and share ideas about the items using the questions provided

Burra is a learning space for children 0-14 years. To ensure the most positive and safe experience for all our visitors, we request that groups manage their day so that a maximum of 10 people visit Burra at any one time.

We encourage all groups of 30 or more people to split into smaller groups within the exhibition spaces. Take the stairs where possible and be mindful of others who may need to use the space, such as people in wheelchairs or who have prams.
